Lake Martin Fall Activities: A Spooktacular Boat Ride to the Halloween House

Updated: Oct 5

There are plenty of Lake Martin fall activities to enjoy—crisp evenings, glowing sunsets, and lakeside adventures—but one tradition stands out from the rest: a trip to the Lake Martin Halloween House. Best of all, you don’t have to wait until October. The house is already glowing and ready in September, making it one of the first seasonal activities you can enjoy on the lake.

While many drive to see the lights, we discovered the best way to experience it is by water. Setting out from River North Marina, our boat ride south turned into an unforgettable evening full of classic Lake Martin landmarks, cozy fall moments, and the glowing magic of the Halloween House.

Why the Halloween House Belongs on Your Lake Martin Fall Activities List

The Lake Martin Halloween House is more than decorations—it’s a destination that combines seasonal fun with the beauty of the lake itself. It’s family-friendly, fun for couples, and unlike anything else you’ll find in Alabama. Visiting by boat makes it feel even more special, transforming a festive light display into a full-blown fall adventure.

Launching from River North Marina

Our journey began at River North Marina, the gateway to adventure on the north end of the lake. It’s the perfect launch point, with easy access from Highway 280 and all the conveniences you need before heading out on the water. On this September evening, the sun was starting to dip low, and the air had that first hint of fall.

With snacks packed, life jackets ready, we pushed off into the open water. The anticipation built as we cruised south, knowing that a glowing Halloween display was waiting for us.

The Route to the Halloween House

The ride to the Halloween House isn’t just about the destination—it’s about the journey. Along the way, you’ll pass some of the most iconic landmarks on Lake Martin, each one adding to the sense of excitement.

Cruising Past Chimney Rock

No Lake Martin outing feels complete without spotting Chimney Rock, the towering cliffs that rise dramatically from the water. In summer, it’s alive with cliff jumpers, but in the fall, it’s calm and majestic. Passing by in the golden glow of sunset gives it a slightly eerie edge, almost like nature’s own Halloween decoration.

Spotting Goat Island

Next comes Goat Island, home to the lake’s most famous four-legged residents. The goats arent't there anymore, but it's still a great place to beach your pontoon for a great afternoon swim. We kept on trucking, though, because the Halloween House was our final destination.

Watching the Sunset

September sunsets on Lake Martin are nothing short of breathtaking. As the sky shifted from fiery orange to dusky purple, the reflections rippled across the water, making our boat ride feel magical. It’s one of those simple moments that remind you why Lake Martin is so special.

Passing Martin Dam

As we cruised closer to our destination, we caught sight of Martin Dam, the hydroelectric powerhouse that created Lake Martin nearly a century ago. Against the twilight sky, its towering structure felt both impressive and a little mysterious—the perfect backdrop for a spooky evening cruise.

First Glimpse of the Halloween House

And then, in the distance, it appeared: the glow of the Halloween House.

At first, it was just a flicker across the water, but soon the entire property came into view—orange, purple, and green lights shimmering from the shoreline, giant inflatable pumpkins grinning, skeletons and ghosts swaying in the breeze. The reflection on the lake doubled the magic, making it look like the house was floating in a world of Halloween wonder.

What to Expect When You Arrive

The atmosphere is festive and fun, but also uniquely serene. Watching the lights from the water is something you’ll never forget. We arrived just after sunset at dusk and there was a family boating in the cove with their children. It was enjoyable just watching their faces as they took in all there was to see. You should expect to see several boats coming and going to this normally quiet cove on Lake Martin.

The Ride Back

When it’s time to leave, the boat ride north feels quieter, calmer. With the Halloween House fading in the distance, stars emerge above and the lake settles into stillness. Wrapped in blankets, everyone reflects on the night—the goats on Goat Island, the colors of the sunset, the thrill of the glowing house.

It’s peaceful, almost meditative, the perfect way to end a spooktacular fall evening.
