Romantic Weekend Getaway Near Lake Martin: A 2-Day Itinerary for Couples

11 min read

Sometimes you don’t need a weeklong vacation. You just need two days away from the alarm clock, the laundry, the errands, and all the other things competing for your attention.

A romantic weekend getaway near Lake Martin, Alabama, is a wonderful way to reconnect without traveling halfway across the country. Located in east-central Alabama, Lake Martin offers boating, waterfront dining, outdoor activities, beautiful scenery, and plenty of opportunities to simply enjoy being together.

And you don't have to rent a lake house to enjoy it.

At Mistletoe Bough Bed & Breakfast in Alexander City, we're about ten minutes from Lake Martin. Our 1895 Queen Anne Victorian home offers five individually appointed guest rooms, a complimentary three-course breakfast each morning, and romantic experiences that can be arranged as part of your stay.

You can spend the day exploring Lake Martin and return to a quiet room, a glass of wine on the wrap around porch, an in-room massage, or even a private dinner for two.

As an innkeeper, I spend a lot of time helping guests decide what to do while they're visiting. I've learned that the best weekends usually include a little adventure, a little indulgence, and enough free time to actually enjoy being away.

So here's how I'd spend a Friday-through-Sunday romantic getaway near Lake Martin, without turning your weekend into an Olympic event.

Friday: Arrive in Alexander City and Settle Into Your Weekend

The first rule of a romantic weekend? You don't need to schedule something for every available hour.

When you arrive in Alexander City, check into Mistletoe Bough and take a little time to explore the house.

Built in 1895, Mistletoe Bough isn't a reproduction or a modern hotel decorated to look old. It's an actual historic Queen Anne Victorian mansion, complete with original woodwork, parquet floors, fireplaces, a turret, and a wraparound veranda that practically begs you to sit down for a while.

The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and much of its original architectural character remains.

But while the house has plenty of history, our guest rooms offer modern conveniences, including comfortable beds, private bathrooms, smart televisions, and high-speed internet.

With only five guest rooms and suites, you won't find long hotel hallways or hundreds of people coming and going.

You can explore our rooms and suites before your visit and choose the accommodations that feel right for your getaway.

Once you've unpacked, give yourself permission to do absolutely nothing productive.

Grab a drink. Walk around the grounds. Sit on the veranda. Take a nap.

You're officially off duty.

Add a Little Romance Before You Arrive

If you're celebrating an anniversary, birthday, engagement, honeymoon, or simply the fact that you've managed to escape for a weekend together, consider arranging a surprise before you arrive.

Our Romance Package includes fresh flowers, chocolate-covered strawberries, and a bottle of wine waiting in your room.

It's an easy way to make your arrival feel special without having to stop somewhere along the way or sneak around trying to surprise your partner.

You just open the door.

We also offer additional guest experiences, including in-room dining, massages, lake outings, and our private Romantic Dinner for Two.

You can explore our romantic getaway packages and guest experiences while planning your visit.

Friday Evening: Enjoy Dinner Together

After traveling, you have two perfectly good options.

You can head out for dinner at one of the restaurants around Alexander City or Lake Martin, or you can decide you've already driven enough for one day and stay at the inn.

For couples who prefer a quiet evening, our Romantic Dinner for Two includes a private three-course dinner served in our formal dining room with a bottle of wine and homemade dessert.

It's a lovely option for anniversaries, birthdays, proposals, and honeymoon weekends.

But you certainly don't need a special occasion.

Sometimes getting away together is occasion enough.

After dinner, enjoy the veranda, take a stroll around the grounds, or head upstairs and enjoy the rare luxury of having nowhere else you need to be.

Saturday Morning: Start With a Three-Course Breakfast

One thing you won't need to do during your stay is search for "breakfast near me."

Breakfast is included at Mistletoe Bough.

Every morning, our overnight guests enjoy a complimentary three-course breakfast. It's one of the experiences that makes staying at a bed and breakfast different from checking into a traditional hotel.

We believe breakfast should feel like part of your getaway, not something you grab from a hotel lobby on your way out the door.

Enjoy your meal. Have another cup of coffee. Talk about what you'd like to do that day.

Lake Martin isn't going anywhere.

Saturday Late Morning: Explore Lake Martin

After breakfast, it's time to head toward the water.

Lake Martin is one of Alabama's most popular lake destinations, with approximately 750 miles of shoreline and plenty of opportunities for boating, fishing, swimming, hiking, and sightseeing.

One of the reasons Alexander City works so well for a weekend getaway is that you can enjoy the lake during the day without having to stay directly on the water.

And there's no shortage of ways to spend your Saturday.

Option 1: Explore Wind Creek State Park

If you enjoy being outdoors, consider visiting Wind Creek State Park, located along the shores of Lake Martin near Alexander City.

The park offers walking and hiking opportunities, lake access, fishing, and beautiful scenery.

It's a good option for couples who want to spend a little time outside without committing to an entire day of activities.

Bring comfortable shoes, take a walk, and enjoy the views.

You can find current park information through Alabama State Parks.

Option 2: Spend Time on Lake Martin

If being on the water is your idea of a perfect Saturday, consider arranging a boat outing.

Lake Martin is known for its clear water, scenic shoreline, and beautiful coves.

Depending on the season and weather, couples can enjoy boating, sightseeing, swimming, or simply relaxing on the lake.

Mistletoe Bough also offers a full-day boating experience called Fun Day in the Sun, which can be arranged as an addition to your stay.

If fishing is more your style, we can also help arrange a guided fishing experience on Lake Martin.

Option 3: Take a Scenic Drive and Explore

Not everyone wants to spend the day boating or hiking.

Some couples would rather explore at their own pace, enjoy the scenery, stop for lunch, and see where the afternoon takes them.

That's perfectly fine too.

Lake Martin has several communities and scenic areas worth exploring, and you don't need an elaborate itinerary to enjoy the region.

For additional ideas, take a look at our 10 Must-Do Lake Martin Activities for First-Time Visitors.

We also have a guide to romantic things to do at Lake Martin.

My recommendation?

Choose one or two activities that genuinely interest you.

This is a romantic getaway, not a scavenger hunt.

Saturday Afternoon: Waterfront Dining or a Little Downtime

By lunchtime, you have another decision to make.

Stay near the lake and enjoy lunch with a water view, or return toward Alexander City for a quieter afternoon.

During the warmer months, waterfront dining is one of the experiences many Lake Martin visitors enjoy most.

Restaurants around the lake offer opportunities to enjoy a meal while watching boats come and go.

Just remember that some lake-area restaurants operate seasonally or have changing schedules, so check current hours before heading out.

And if you've already enjoyed a full morning of activities, there's nothing wrong with returning to Mistletoe Bough.

Read on the veranda. Take a nap. Wander around the house. Sit together and talk without a television competing for your attention.

Or arrange an in-room massage.

We offer both individual and couples massages, allowing guests to enjoy a relaxing experience without having to travel to a separate spa.

It's one of my favorite recommendations for couples who want their weekend to feel like a genuine break from everyday life.

Saturday Evening: Experience a Lake Martin Sunset Cruise

If you ask me for one experience that can completely change the feel of a romantic weekend near Lake Martin, sunset on the water is pretty hard to beat.

Mistletoe Bough offers a two-hour Sunset Cruise on Lake Martin, complete with a charcuterie board for two and a bottle of wine.

You don't have to rent a boat. You don't have to figure out where you're going.

And nobody in your relationship has to pretend they know how to dock one.

You just get to enjoy the ride.

As the sun begins to set, the lake takes on a different personality. The daytime activity starts winding down, the light softens, and the water reflects the colors of the evening sky.

For couples celebrating an anniversary, birthday, honeymoon, or simply enjoying a weekend together, it's a memorable way to experience Lake Martin.

Of course, sunset cruises are weather-dependent, and arrangements should be made in advance.

You can learn more about this experience and our other guest packages at Mistletoe Bough.

Sunday Morning: Enjoy One More Breakfast Before Heading Home

Sunday morning is when many weekend trips go wrong.

Everybody wakes up, starts throwing things into suitcases, and mentally returns to Monday before breakfast has even been served.

Don't do that to yourself.

Come downstairs and enjoy another three-course breakfast.

Have your coffee. Talk about your favorite part of the weekend. Take one more walk around the grounds or sit on the veranda before you pack up.

One of the reasons we love hosting couples at Mistletoe Bough is that a bed and breakfast getaway encourages you to slow down in a way that a typical hotel stay sometimes doesn't.

You aren't anonymous room number 214.

There are only five guest rooms here. Breakfast is prepared for you. The house itself is part of the experience.

And you have time to actually enjoy where you're staying.

One More Stop Before You Leave Lake Martin

Your weekend doesn't have to end the moment you check out.

If the weather is nice, spend a little more time exploring the area before heading home.

Take a scenic drive, stop for lunch, revisit a favorite spot along the lake, or explore somewhere you didn't have time to see on Saturday.

You might also consider visiting Horseshoe Bend National Military Park, which preserves an important part of American history near the Tallapoosa River.

And don't feel like you have to see everything during one visit.

Lake Martin changes throughout the year.

Summer brings boating and long days on the water. Fall offers cooler temperatures and beautiful scenery. Winter weekends can be wonderfully quiet, and spring brings everything back to life.

There's always a reason to return.

Why Choose a Bed and Breakfast for a Lake Martin Weekend?

When planning a trip to Lake Martin, travelers have several accommodation options.

You can book a traditional hotel, rent a lake house, choose a vacation rental, or stay at a bed and breakfast.

The best choice depends on the kind of experience you want.

A lake house may be ideal for a larger group planning to spend most of its time on the water.

A traditional hotel may be convenient for travelers who simply need somewhere to sleep.

But for couples looking for something a little more personal, a historic bed and breakfast offers a different experience.

At Mistletoe Bough, you can enjoy:

  • Five individually appointed rooms and suites in an authentic 1895 Victorian mansion.

  • A complimentary three-course breakfast each morning.

  • Original architectural details and a beautiful wraparound veranda.

  • Modern guest room conveniences, including private bathrooms and high-speed internet.

  • Optional romance packages, private dining, massages, and Lake Martin experiences.

  • A convenient Alexander City location for exploring Lake Martin and the surrounding area.

And because we're a small, independently owned property, we enjoy getting to know our guests and helping them make the most of their visit.

We're not trying to be a large resort or a chain hotel.

We offer something different.

Is Lake Martin Worth Visiting Outside of Summer?

Absolutely.

Although Lake Martin is especially popular during the summer, it's also a wonderful destination for couples who prefer quieter travel.

Spring: Enjoy pleasant weather, outdoor activities, blooming landscapes, and the beginning of the lake season.

Summer: Experience boating, swimming, waterfront restaurants, and long evenings on the water.

Fall: Take advantage of cooler temperatures, scenic drives, outdoor activities, and a more relaxed atmosphere as summer crowds diminish.

Winter: Enjoy a peaceful stay at a historic B&B, a special dinner, an in-room massage, or simply a weekend away without a busy schedule.

Some lake activities and restaurants are seasonal, but a romantic getaway doesn't have to revolve entirely around the water.

Sometimes the best part of a trip is simply having somewhere lovely to stay.

Planning a Romantic Getaway From Birmingham, Montgomery, or Auburn?

For couples traveling from Birmingham, Montgomery, Auburn, and other nearby communities, Alexander City offers an opportunity to get away without planning a complicated vacation.
