A Hallmark Christmas Getaway in Alabama: Inside Our Holiday-Decorated B&B

If you've ever wished you could just step into a Hallmark Christmas movie — garland on the staircase, a crackling fire, snow-less but somehow still magical — a Hallmark Christmas getaway in Alabama might be closer than you think. Every end of October, we transform Mistletoe Bough into exactly that kind of scene, and it's not just us saying so. Guest after guest walks through our front door during the holidays and says some version of the same thing: "This feels like a house in a Hallmark movie." So we decided to lean all the way into it.

Let's talk about what that actually looks like, and how to build a full holiday weekend around it — including some genuinely wonderful local Christmas traditions most out-of-town visitors don't know exist yet.

Why Guests Keep Comparing Us to a Hallmark Movie

Here's a little secret: it's not one big showstopper decoration that does it. It's the layering. Garland winding up the grand staircase. A tree in the parlor dressed in warm white lights. Wreaths on every window facing the wraparound veranda. The kind of detail where you turn a corner and there's another charming little touch you didn't expect.

Part of it, honestly, is the bones of the house itself. You can't fake a home that's been standing since the 1890s — the architecture does half the work before we even hang a single ornament. Add candlelight, the smell of something baking, and a porch that looks like it was built for a couple to sit on with hot cocoa, and you get why "Hallmark" is the word people reach for. It's not a theme we manufactured. It's just what happens when a Queen Anne Victorian goes all-in for Christmas.

A Hallmark Christmas Getaway in Alabama: What to Expect at Mistletoe Bough

If you're picturing your stay, here's what a typical Hallmark-style couples getaway at Mistletoe Bough looks like during November and December:

  • Wake up to a full Southern breakfast in a dining room dressed for the season

  • Spend your morning wandering the gardens or rocking on the veranda with coffee

  • Take the short drive into downtown Alexander City for shopping, dinner, or a Christmas event (more on that below)

  • Come back to a fireplace, a quiet room, and a house that still smells like cinnamon

  • Add on a romantic dinner or couples massage package if you want to make it extra special

It's a slower kind of Christmas. No relatives to referee, no gift-wrapping marathon — just the two of you and a house that's doing all the festive heavy lifting.

Local Christmas Traditions to Build Your Getaway Around

This is the part I really want you to pay attention to, because it's what turns "nice B&B" into "full weekend trip worth planning around." Alexander City and the surrounding Lake Martin area go all-out for the holidays, and most of it happens within a five-to-ten-minute drive of our front porch.

The Hometown Christmas Parade.

Hosted by the Alexander City Chamber of Commerce, this is a longtime community tradition that lines up on Comer Street before proceeding down Cherokee Road toward Benjamin Russell High School, then turns toward downtown, ending near Strand Park. Think decorated floats, marching bands, dancers, and Santa closing things out. Bring a chair, grab a spot along the route, and you've got a genuinely charming small-town Christmas parade experience.

The Lake Martin Christmas Boat Parade.

If you thought a Christmas parade couldn't get more scenic, wait until you see it on the water. Boats big and small get decked out in their brightest lights and most festive decor for this parade, which starts at The Social at Lake Martin and ends at Bluffs Daiquiri Bar at Harbor Point. Whether you watch from the shoreline with a warm drink or make an evening of it at one of the restaurants along the route, it's one of the most unique holiday traditions in the whole region.

Downtown Christmas.

Main Street Alexander City partners with the local Parks and Recreation Department to put on a full afternoon of holiday activities downtown, and past years have included things like Frosty's Playground, letters to Santa, a Polar Express experience, ornament building, and hot cocoa. It's a great add-on if your trip happens to line up, and it makes for wonderful photos against our downtown's historic storefronts.

Holiday Open House.

Downtown shops in both Alexander City and Dadeville open their doors for a full day of holiday cheer, offering special discounts, seasonal treats, and gift inspiration — a nice, low-key way to spend part of your afternoon browsing local boutiques before heading back to the inn.

A Live Nativity.

Downtown, First United Methodist Church puts on an elaborate live nativity featuring real animals and live actors, which is the kind of unexpected, wholesome moment that tends to stick with visitors long after they've gone home. The Bama Buzz

None of these events are things we run ourselves — they're genuine community traditions, which is exactly what makes them special. You're not getting a manufactured "Christmas experience." You're getting the real, small-town Alabama holiday season, with a historic B&B as your home base for it.

Best Time to Book Your Alabama Christmas Getaway

If you're wondering when to plan your trip, the sweet spot is generally late November through mid-December — that's when our decorations are at their fullest and most of the community events above are in full swing. Late December tends to quiet back down as families shift into the holiday itself, so if you want the parades, the lights, and the downtown bustle alongside your cozy B&B stay, aim for that first-two-weeks-of-December window. But make your plans now, as the B&B books up quickly.

This is also, frankly, one of the best-kept secrets about visiting Lake Martin. Most people think of this area as a summer lake destination — and it absolutely is — but the off-season brings a completely different kind of charm. Quieter roads, a slower pace, and a whole lot of twinkle lights without a single pontoon boat in sight.

Pairing a Christmas Stay With a Proposal (or an Elopement)

Here's something worth mentioning if it applies to you: December is one of the most popular months of the year for proposals, and a fully decorated, historic Christmas B&B makes for a genuinely beautiful backdrop for one. If you're planning to pop the question during your stay — or if the trip is the proposal — we're always happy to help set the scene.

And if you're the type of couple who might get engaged over the holidays and start thinking "let's just elope" shortly after, you're not alone — we see that pattern every year. If that's a possibility on your horizon, take a look at our guide to Alabama elopement packages for what a small, intimate ceremony here can look like once wedding season rolls back around.
